The Cape Fear Coast Offers a Diverse Real Estate Market
Early settlers first discovered this area in 1720 and it has been growing and booming ever since. Wilmington, in those early years, was known as New Liverpool, later as Newton, and finally becoming Wilmington around 1740. Many of the early settlers were maritime businessmen, port workers and farmers who were looking for new opportunities. Others were farmers who did not inherit lands already settled in the original thirteen colonies, and the Cape Fear River Basin was perfect with very fertile land.
It was this beginning along with the Civil War that has had the most in influence on Wilmington's diverse neighborhoods. The area evolved from a thriving port town, to an integral part of the South's defense against the Union armies, to a river town where goods and supplies moved freely, with large gentleman plantations throughout the area. In later years the railroad, shipbuilding, along with textiles, and tobacco, helped shape today's various distinct neighborhoods.
Wilmington's real estate market has evolved from those early beginnings....from gracious historical antebellum homes, to beautiful homes on the area's numerous golf courses, working class neighborhoods, suburban family neighborhoods, condos, million dollar island retreats at Figure Eight Island, retirement homes, homes with acreage, and of course beach front homes!
Population exploded during the latter half of the 1980's and has more than doubled to over 100,000 city residents since...
there was quite a building boom!
Along with all that new construction, Wilmington also is one of the largest historic districts encompassing nearly 300 blocks. Abandoned warehouse buildings on downtown's northern end have been recently demolished making room for multimillion dollar projects such as PPD's Pharmacuticals World Headquarters and a state of the art convention center which opened in 2011.
BUT Wilmington is mostly about the beach! Wrightsville, Kure, and Carolina Beaches offer the ocean lover plenty of opportunities to enjoy water recreation. Fabulous beach homes abound! Fishing piers, marinas, boating, or just relaxing under the sun, a favorite pastime....and the weather is perfect for this type of enjoyment!
